The science of getting married

Details: The Accessories September 26, 2009

I really struggled with the accessories. I purchased a Haute Bride necklace that I didn’t actually wear, and didn’t find shoes until the day before the wedding. Of course we’d purchased shoes (3 pair!) for the wedding, but with an outside ceremony, and the fact that I was pregnant, I really didn’t want some skinny heels sinking into the ground every time I stepped out of doors.

The shoes – just some bright kicks I found at Famous Footwear (how uncool, I know!) – they were comfy for the entire day, and the color was nice and bright, so they fit the bill. Bonus: they were only $50.

The hairpiece – I ordered this lovely piece as a birdcage veil from Twigs and Honey on Etsy. Myra didn’t really “get” my concept of the veil that would sweep across the face (at the time, she didn’t get it, she’s since made dozens that echo that look) – but her work is so great, I decided to keep it and make it work. With a little repositioning, it turned out to be fantastic! The piece cost about $70.

The earrings – I ordered my earrings from Haute Bride. I love their delicate filigree look, and adored the art deco feel the invoked. Their styles have changed in the last year or so, but there are similar styles on their site.

The necklace – I was really on the fence on this front. My dear husband gave me a strand of akoya pearls for Christmas last year, and I really do love them. I look forward to the day, years from now, when I can give them to our daughter. But I also received another strand of pearls, just weeks before the wedding. The difference between the two was the clasps – and since the new strand had a white gold clasp, I chose to wear that one. In hindsight, my husband and I are both a bit sad that I didn’t wear the ones he gave me, because of the sentimental value, but either way, the pearls looked stunning on our wedding day.

The bracelet – my something borrowed, my sister Shaunessy let me borrow a 3-strand pearl bracelet with a brooch centering them. Thanks little sister!

Oh my, I adore this lovely little bridal headband by Little White Dresser on Etsy – it’s lovely and sweet – vintage-y and of-the-moment. Oh, and the price – the “true star” headband is only $18! Headbands and flowing hair are such a gorgeous bridal look – I’m glad the combination is so popular right now.

My husband knew what he wanted for his wedding day look.

He got his suit from Saks – a wonderful navy Burberry suit, the cut was so great, it almost didn’t need alterations (but of course we needed some minor tweaks – Top Shelf in Uptown did an excellent job). Since he wears suits to work (and owns over a dozen of them), he has a pretty good eye for them, and this one will hopefully be used again for events and maybe work.

The shirt came from Saks – another Burberry number. A great shirt, that he can wear to work or other events.

The tie came from Jos A. Bank – it feels a bit like an old-man shore, but after looking EVERYWHERE for a tie that works, this one was truly the best – and only $40!

The shoes came from… Saks. Again, these can be used again as work attire.

Socks – his dresser drawer. I wanted him to get some fun socks to match the color scheme, but that’s not really his style, so we stuck with navy.

The entire cost was well over $1,000 – which is a lot compared to a tux rental, but totally worth it for these pieces that will hopefully be in his wardrobe for ages.

Details: The Dress & Bolero September 23, 2009

My wedding dress situation was a saga! I purchased a Vera Wang from the Macy’s sample sale, but was unable to wear that because I had sent it to get a few alterations, and my seamstress sent it to the cleaner – and when I returned for a fitting, I noticed an awful, huge stain on the bodice, rendering it useless.

Dress #2 came from Priscilla of Boston – a fabulous little ivory fitted Melissa Sweet dress with sweetheart neckline and mermaid (fit and flare) skirting.

I couldn’t wear that because we discovered that I was pregnant in December (after 9 months of being engaged) and the wedding was set for May. We went back and forth a LOT on whether to move the wedding date or keep it. Ultimately, we decided to go for it on our designated date (May 16), even though I’d be 6 months pregnant. The Melissa Sweet dress certainly wouldn’t do.

After scouring the net for something that would work for a big old belly, I settled on a BCBG dress. It was only $380 – but it worked well with my body-shape at the wedding. I had some alterations made (at “Sew What!” in Saint Louis Park – love that place!) and the dress was ready to be worn.

I wanted a bolero for the wedding, on the off chance that it’d be cool (and it was – with gale-force winds and below 55 degree weather, it was downright cold!). I ordered a raw-silk shrug from LarimeLoom on Etsy. Luckily, the color was quite close to the dress’ color – so they looked pretty great together. In all, I was sad I couldn’t wear the other dress(es) – but pretty satisfied with how my “look” turned out.

As for the other 2 dresses, Melissa Sweet found a new home via Once Wed, and the Vera was donated to Mary Madeline project.

Details: The Centerpieces September 22, 2009

The centerpieces were simple, exactly what I wanted. I purchased 60 old blue Ball quart jars on Craigslist. The day before the wedding, my sister and I purchased 12 bouquets of flowers from Trader Joe’s.

We paired them with tealights and a mixture of bamboo table runners and polka dotted runners. My awesome aunt Vivian sewed the runners and arranged the flowers.

The results: bright, cheery and perfectly matched for our casual spring wedding.

Fabulous Yellow Bridesmaid Dresses September 19, 2009

After seeing how popular my previous yellow bridesmaid dress post was, I figured it was time to give you more of what you want.

Here’s a great resource: Graceful Day Design

Wow! I Totally Would Have Worn This Dress September 17, 2009

This dress shocked me – I don’t know what it is about it… the skirt is like a meringue – all light and fluffy. The bodice is perfect, fitted and fabulous, but not too lowcut. I would have seriously worn this dress if I’d found it a year ago – and I’m not the princess-gown kind of girl.

And the price — I can’t believe it’s under $300!

Inexpensive, Easy Save The Dates & Thank You Cards September 16, 2009

I wish I’d explored save the date options more when we first chose our wedding date. I know a lot of brides and grooms use the photocard option – it’s inexpensive and can highlight those often underused engagement photos.

I stumbled up Costco’s photocards recently – and just have to share how wonderful they are. The process for ordering is absolutely simple. Just load your photos, add them to a template, add your copy, review and submit. Once you’ve submitted them, you can have the order processed and pick them up THE NEXT MORNING at your local Costco. The price is pretty fabulous. 6.5×7 photocards with envelopes are $15.99 for the first set of 50, and $6.99 for each additional set. 75 Save the Dates for only $22? That’s pretty amazing. The prices are better than what I’ve found on Target, Shutterfly and Walmart – especially when considering the size and quality. Is it obvious that I’m super impressed by these photocards? They’d also work really well as thank-you cards!

I heard that they’re changing the designs available pretty soon – but I imagine they’re just adding options or making them more customizable.

If you’ve got a membership, check them out. If you don’t — the membership is more than worth it, if you’re getting your STDs here.

Another great ebay find – this 50s cocktail dress would look swell on the right bride. I’m envisioning a supper-club feel for the reception, with a fantastic pillbox hat or a sweet birdcage veil with feathered details.

This beauty is listed at $65 – or best offer.
